Cycling routes safe for families and beginners
Protected paths through Vondelpark and along the Amstel now see steady morning traffic from parents with children on tag-along bikes.

Protected bike lanes added last year now connect the southern edge of Vondelpark directly to the quieter stretches of the Amstel River path, giving families a continuous 8-kilometre loop without crossing busy car traffic.
Summer temperatures and longer daylight have pushed more households outdoors for daily exercise, and local transport data shows a 22 percent rise in family bike trips on weekend mornings compared with the same period in 2024.
Two routes that stay away from main roads
The first option starts at the Paulus Potterstraat entrance to Vondelpark and follows the wide, red-brick path past the open-air theatre before exiting near the Stadhouderskade bridge. From there riders pick up the dedicated riverside lane that runs south past the former Heineken brewery site and into the quieter Beatrixpark neighbourhood. The second route begins at the western gate near the Vondelpark 3 playground and heads north along the inner ring canal before turning onto the low-traffic Overtoom side streets that lead to the Westergas area.
Both routes are marked on the city’s updated Fietskaart that went on sale at all public libraries on 1 June 2026 for €4.50. The map highlights 12 family-rated segments with average widths of 3 metres and speed limits of 15 kilometres per hour for motor vehicles where they must share space.
Practical steps before heading out
Rentals at the MacBike depot on Weteringschans cost €9 for a standard city bike and €14 for a model fitted with a child seat for the full day. Helmets are available for an extra €2. Parents are advised to start before 10 a.m. to avoid the busiest tourist flow near the park’s central pond. A quick check of the city’s free Fietsapp shows real-time crowding levels on each segment before departure.
Anyone unsure about distances can join the free Saturday morning group rides organised by the local chapter of Fietsersbond that leave from the Vondelpark bandstand at 9 a.m. and return by 11 a.m. The next session is scheduled for 13 July.
