Outdoor pools and rock pools perfect for lap swimming
Dedicated lanes at park venues draw Amsterdam swimmers seeking structured outdoor workouts amid the city's summer season.
How we reported this

More than 12,000 lap sessions took place at Amsterdam outdoor pools during the first week of July this year, according to city recreation records released on 7 July.
The increase aligns with rising demand for open-air exercise as residents return to canal-adjacent parks after the winter months. Dutch healthcare data show steady growth in preventive activity programs that encourage water-based movement for cardiovascular health, particularly in neighbourhoods where cycling paths already connect directly to swimming sites.
Named venues with lap lanes
Flevoparkbad in the Indische Buurt opened its 50-metre outdoor lanes on 1 June and maintains separate sections for continuous lap swimming from 7am to 9am each weekday. The facility sits beside the Flevopark cycle route, allowing riders to reach the water without crossing major roads. In the south, the rock pool installation at Beatrixpark near the RAI station added four 25-metre lanes last month, carved into existing stone edges along a shallow basin that stays at 22 degrees Celsius through August.
Both sites operate under the municipal Sport Amsterdam programme, which coordinates lane reservations through a single online portal. Swimmers at Flevoparkbad can combine a session with a short ride through the adjacent Oosterpark, while Beatrixpark users often continue to the nearby Amstel canal paths after their swim.
Entry costs and next steps
Adult entry stands at 5.25 euros per session, with a 10-ride pass available for 42 euros through the city app. The programme runs until 30 September, and capacity limits require advance booking on peak days. Residents should check water quality updates on the Sport Amsterdam site before travel and arrive 15 minutes early to secure a lane during the 7am slot.
